How to Make a Custom Bobblehead From a Photo
A custom bobblehead used to mean mailing a photo to a sculptor, paying $80 to $150, and waiting a few weeks. If you own a 3D printer, you can now make a personalized bobblehead of yourself, your partner, or your dog in an afternoon, and print as many as you like.
The PrintPal Bobblehead Maker turns one photo into a 3D printed bobblehead. AI redraws the subject as a cute big-headed collectible figure, builds it in 3D, and the tool adds a fully printable spiral spring so the head actually bobbles. No CAD, no glue, and no metal spring.
What you get
- A real likeness in a chibi style. A big head, glossy eyes, and a short chunky body, with the face shape, hair, glasses, fur pattern, and outfit taken from your photo.
- People or pets. Selfies, couples, kids, dogs, cats, rabbits, and horses all work.
- Full color or plain. Full color is reduced to 2 to 4 filament colors for an AMS. Plain gives a single-color print you can paint.
- A printable spring that bobbles. A 30 mm spiral-cut disc screws into the body and press-fits into the head.
- Slicer-ready files. A multi-color 3MF for Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer with colors pre-assigned, or an STL ZIP for any slicer.
How to make a bobblehead of yourself or your pet
1. Upload a photo
Open the Bobblehead Maker and drop a photo into the Figure section. The best photos are well lit, with the face visible and facing the camera or at a 3/4 angle. A headshot is fine: the AI invents a matching body. For pets, a sitting or standing photo beats a top-down shot.
Add an optional note to steer it, like "big grin", "wearing her Cubs jersey", or "holding a coffee mug". Tick Full-color model if you want a multicolor print, then click Generate. It takes about 4 to 6 minutes, and you can leave and reload it from your history.

Already have a figure? Switch to Upload 3D and drop in an STL, OBJ, or GLB instead.
2. Pick the neck
The tool finds the narrowest point between the shoulders and head and places a blue cut plane there. Drag the arrows to move it, or click Pick neck and click the figure. A see-through ghost of the spring shows exactly where it will sit, and turns amber if it would poke out.

3. Tune the bobble
Head size and total height are automatic. The head is enlarged to classic bobblehead proportions, and the figure is scaled just enough to hide the spring inside it. Each value also has a slider if you want more control.
- Spring: Soft for a small, light head, Standard for most figures, Stiff for a big, heavy head.
- Fit: Snug, Normal, or Loose, depending on how tight your printer prints.
- Plinth: Round or square, in any color.
Press Bobble it! to watch the head rock in the preview.
4. Export
Download the Color 3MF for Bambu Studio or OrcaSlicer, then map the listed filaments to your AMS slots. Or grab the STL ZIP with the body, head, and spring disc, already in print orientation.
Bobblehead 3D print settings
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Layer height | 0.12 to 0.20 mm |
| Walls | 3 |
| Infill | 10 to 15% (spring disc: 3+ walls or 100%) |
| Material | PLA or PETG for body and head, PETG for the springiest disc |
| Orientation | Print exactly as exported |
| Supports | None for the mechanism; tree supports only for big overhangs like ears or hat brims |
Assemble it in two minutes

- Clean any first-layer squish off the threads and the head recess with a hobby knife.
- Screw the spring stud into the body until the disc floats a couple of millimeters above the boss. Don't force it to the bottom.
- Set the head on the disc, face forward, and press down evenly until the rim seats. The taper holds it without glue.
- Flick the head. Too stiff? Re-export with the Soft spring and reprint only the disc. Too floppy? Use Stiff.
Because the head is held by a round recess, you can turn the face to any angle, and you can pull it apart later to swap springs.
